Once upon a time in a faraway year called 2001, a young boy named Harry Potter appeared on movie screens everywhere and became the first novel adapted movie franchise of the new millennium. Then seven years later in 2008 a sparkling vampire in a movie called Twilight became another phenomenon. The sequels to these two movies broke tons of box office records and garnered millions of fans. They seemed to prove that movies adapted from successful books could be real box office hits. 

However the Harry Potter and Twilight eras are coming to the end, as the last Harry Potter movie will come out in 2011 and part one of the last Twilight movie will do the same. The question of what series would take over as the next major box office cash-grabber has been looming for quite a while now, and it seems as though the general consensus as of late is that the movie adaption of the popular book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins might have the ability to be that series.

The Hungers Games series is a dystopian science fiction trilogy. The first book, The Hunger Games, centers on the protagonist’s, a girl named Katniss, participation in an event called the Hunger Games, which is a televised game in which teenagers are forced to kill one another until only one of them is left. The other two books, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, show the consequences of the games as well as the corrupt government that runs them. 

The book series has captured the hearts and minds of many and has been slated to be made into a movie for about a year now. However, no definitive news had come out about the movie until this weekend when it was announced that the movie would be released on March 23, 2012. 

The release date actually places the release of the first Hunger Games movie before the finale to the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn Part 2, which is due out November 16, 2012. However, it is entirely possible that with the immense following that The Hunger Games has garnered as well as the release date of the movie slated to be in the same year as the ending of Twilight and a year after the ending of Harry Potter that the movie industry may well have another major book to screen success story on their hands. Only time will tell.
