Steroid Talk

When will the media allow these athletes to move on with their lives?

Baseball and Steroids just don't mix and they have to stop and they have to stop now. Steroids are giving baseball a bad name. Photo By Ricky Rhodes.

The talk about steroids is still continuing in baseball and I am getting tired of it. I wish that these players would just come out and admit to taking them and “face the music”. Most of the time a fan of baseball, or of any sport, can tell if a person is on steroids or not.

Former 12 time All-Star slugger Mark McGwire has just admitted that he used steroids on and off throughout his career. In 2005 McGwire went in front of congress and declined and refused that he used “Roids”. He said in an interview with Bob Costas “All I wanted to do was come clean. I wanted to come clean since 2005. I didn’t know where when or how. I’ve just been holding this in.”

Being a baseball fan, there is only one wish that I want, besides my team the New York Yankees winning the World Series, is for this steroid era to come to an end. I wish that these players would just come clean and admit that they used them instead of the media finding out first and then the media blowing it up and making it bigger then it really is.

I may be giving you a thought that if the players admit to their usage of steroids that then it won’t be as much of a “big deal”. But I am not saying that. What I am saying is that the media brings it up and writes there articles and makes it bigger then what it needs to be. If the players admit to that they have used them then they know that they have done something wrong and then they will want to get over the fact that they have made a mistake and they will want to fix it.

Do I think that steroids are bad in sports and not just baseball? Yes.

I am just getting tired of hearing about this tragedy in baseball every few months or so. Tired of hearing stuff like, “Another player is accused of using steroids and, they have stated that they have never used them. It’s obvious that you have used them because there are tests that show that you have used them, so why don’t they just admit it. Some of the excuses are something like “I didn’t know” or “I was putting those into my body” or something around those lines. So what there telling me and everyone else is that they just put some kind of pill/drug in your body and they don’t know what it is? Well that is just ridiculous. Why would someone ever do that to himself?

Being a fan of sports as in baseball, football, basketball, hockey and others I just want the steroid talk to stop. It ruins the sport’s image. I am tired of hearing and reading headlines such as “This player was caught using steroids” or “This player was caught using HGH”.

I first asked senior Nick Scannell, a baseball player for the school. He agrees with the fact that “it’s over and once it’s done it’s done”.

“I am just tired of it,” continued Scannell. “Once the Mitchell Report first came out I was interested because of the fact that I am a baseball fan and I wanted to know who was cheating the game but now that the media keeps dragging it on once someone admits or they are accused of taking ‘roids – it’s just stupid. Give it up.”

“The fact that we are finding about these players now, although it is important, the past is the past and there is no control about the amount of players who used them,” said senior Joe Manganiello.

“When we find out about the players who are still using them is scary, but there is not much you can do about the past. At least McGwire was honest, so you have to respect it.”
